I watched a lot of cartoons and movies. I draw incessantly and carry a sketchbook everywhere. I work in animation and self-publish my books. There are monsters in the streets, don't wear red. Mad bulls and monsters hate that color. I still watch cartoons.

Tirade Oekaki has moved! Not too far.

Keeping limber with a fashion illustration exercise and a poster study. Both illustrations based on images found at The World of Kane

Whole lotta moving going on. The Tirade oekaki board has been around for a long time and a favored stop for those who tire of Photoshop (after all, a lot of you already have that as your default drawing program). The simple java applet provides a more casual tool to use even as it mimics the basic Photoshop tools. For some, like Claudio Acciari, it appears to rival Photoshop for that favored default spot.

Well, the folks responsible for hosting our board are moving servers and gave us an alert to say that they are moving the address to here.

Please make a note of it. It's all there and nothing has changed. I always make a habit of grabbing my finished image onto my personal files because the gallery holds only a fixed number and the drawings fall off as it makes room for new ones. That is, they disappear. Don't wait too long after you finish drawing and posting. Keep a copy for yourself, if you care. I have a folder of Claudio and others somewhere in my work or home machines.

A Nina lost in the scary dark dreamscape. There is also a blue study in the oekaki board.

The banner to the right has the link to the oekaki board's new location (the headline above as well). Oh, and if you want to start your very own board you can check out how here.

Happy Holidays 2007

Mostly done on my Oekaki board. I brought it in to Photoshop, hoping to jazz it up. Didn't really do much--just touch ups. But do check out the OK BBs link on the side bar.

Wishing you all the best. Have a happy and safe holiday. This is an Oekaki drawing, something I haven't done in a while. The java applet seemed to be working better in my Safari browser (though still not working in Firefox) since an update on my java came around. Good to be drawing.

It was a good year. I travelled to many wonderful places (I also have so much back log of posts--from the Italy, France and Philippine trips) and so glad to have met so many good people. I hope to see them all again soon.

Be well and here's to the new year, may it bring you all peace and happiness.

How to post your marvelous OK-BBS drawings

Easy. First off, for those of you wondering what OK-BBS is, check out this entry on Wikipedia. Then take a look at the side bar where I have a banner that says, "Oekaki BBS/Paper Biscuit." Click that and you're at my Oekaki board.

Some of you are having trouble posting. It may be a glitch somewhere but before we hunt around for those let's eliminate the possibility that it may just be a procedure confusion. It's not difficult, really, but the Java applet UI labels may confuse some.

After the masterpiece is done and ready to post on the board take a look at the three buttons on the top left that says, "SAVE." It's written above "AUTO," "PNG" and "JPG." I use either of the last two since those formats are browser friendly. I don't know what happens with "AUTO" so write me if you find out. After that a box appears asking you, "Save OK?" and buttons to choose. And after that it just confirms that you've saved. Then viola! Go back to the main board and check out your drawing. Reload if you used the "Back" button on your browser.

Write me if the problem of not being able to post persists. I'll try my best to ask the kind folks from Japan who run these boards for a fix. Happy drawing and posting.

Update: Found a tutorial for Oekaki BBS here.

_____

UPDATE on posting trouble. Soraya Saga investigated the trouble for me and found out what is causing it.

According to Oekaki FAQ, following versions of JAVA seem to cause problems of painting/uploading.

JAVA1.4.1Update 1 (Mac)
JAVA1.4.2Update 2 (Mac)
JAVAUpDatefor10.3.9 (Mac)

SunJAVA1.4.2_6 (XP)
SunJAVA1.4.2_7 (XP)

Also it says that posting via proxy server is likely be denied occasionally.
I hope it works. :)

Those of you having trouble check your Java versions. Like most updates it can wreak havoc with programs in the far flung edges. Knowing is good but I don't have a solution--other than reverting to an earlier version of Java. I hope this helps and I'm hoping that OK BBS releases an update themselves that puts all this to rest.

Meantime, here's a list of configurations of operating systems, browsers and Java versions that have managed to post on the board.

Mozilla/4.0 (Mac OS X 10.4.5) Java/1.4.2_09 (lagging response)
Mozilla/4.0 (Mac OS X 10.3.9) Java/1.4.2_09

________

UPDATE March 11, 2005. The awesome Soraya Saga trolled the OK-BBS faqs and sent us some that address the posting problem (it's in the comments to this post and I'm posting it up front here).

This problem has been frequently reported among technical support boards, some are caused by PC environments, some are caused by server error of the OK BBS itself.

Shown below are most recent questions picked up from the oekaki FAQ board.

Q: The drawing window doesn't work.
A: Try a proper version of JAVA.

Q: It freezed up after I clicked the save button.
A: Some security softwares and pop-up blockers conflict with the OK BBS.

Q: A transfer error occurred after clicking the save button.
A: It could be a) the internet connection error. b) the OK BBS server error.

Q: The drawing was successfully saved but not appeared.
A: Clear the browser's cache and reload the board.

I'll continue to search for a good solution for the problem. :)

A tremendous thank you to Sora. This helps us troubleshoot on our end. Hopefully these new clues correct some of the problems some of you are having with posting. Heck, I hope it's an OK BBS server problem to begin with and that they've fixed it. And if not, I hope that all the above posted fixes and clues fix the rest.

Claudio Acciari strikes again

All these Acciari's were done on the site's local drawing applet that lets you draw right online. No photoshop, but good enough. Again proving that it's not the tool but furshlugginer artist weilding it.

He is a serial Oekaki poster. That is, he has this compulsion to tag many an Oekaki board with his lovely creations. Like he's an internet Zorro of sorts. Don't know what an Oekaki board is? Hmmm, well...Let's see. See the Wikipedia entry explaining what this is here.

Check mine out and see if you can pick out the Acciari's. Here.
Search more here.
Here's another.

He is an animator by trade and an excellent designer as well. We worked on the same movie long time ago but never got together--lord knows we probably had a lot to gripe about then. Caught up with each other where else? In Dubya's internets. Or is it Al Gore's? Claudio, inexplicably enough, does not have a website of his own. I've needled him about this and he says, "Soon." I cannot wait. In the mean time...

Acciari Gallery. Thanks for the tiny url, Lee-roy.

Another one care of Alessandro Carloni here.

And while I'm at it, Alessandro is no slouch either. His website of awesome sketchbook loveliness here. Enjoying the view? Check out his links and it opens up to more awesome drawing talent. Enough to give a guy a complex. Love them all.
